On the long flight home from New York last week I was handed a bag of goodies by the flight attendant. I excitedly undid the bag, almost like a child would undo a long awaited Christmas present. After all as competition has finished I can eat whatever I like....right?

Inside the attractive bag which had a pretty bow for me to undo, were two small chocolate bars, a bag of flavoured potato chips and a sweet cookie. I try ...I really do but my brain just doesn’t recognise this as food! So it was into my carry-on bag I reached for my organic rice cakes and a couple of sachets of almond butter.

It’s all the little things that you don’t eat that make a BIG difference. I did notice that many people will eat whatever they are given and not even think about it. Some people eat everything on their plate (and in their goodie bags) regardless if they are full. Without sounding like a killjoy, make it a habit before you eat and ask yourself, do you really need to eat it? Are you just eating for taste? And finally what you are eating is going to do you any good nutritionally.

My own goodie bag had organic wild rice cakes, almond butter and ½ pear inside. I was pulled up in customs for the other half...oops. But that’s another story.
